Sadly where I live we'r not exactly a rainbow. lol I wish it was more diverse though because I hear a lot of racism from some people here. Some here will be telling a story and they'll start out with "Now I'm not racist, but..........." I hate that! As soon as they say that I'm like, yes you are.

One of best friends is black and she teaches me a lot :)

Tony I understood why you made your statement. Mizz did not go into details about why she wrote what she did so it gave any reader the misunderstanding of what was going on. The only way there would have been light on the writing was if each person was in her situation and understood. This is a prime example of how communication goes wrong when others do not express entirely what they mean whey they write or say something. I am not stating that your assumption was wrong or right neither am I saying mizz is wrong to defuse what you said. My point is when people communicate he/she need to be clear and concise to prevent others from being confused or creating assumptions.

Take care

Hi there, Tony. Thank you for your kind words. I speak them from the heart and because I have to say something.

Now, in answer to your question to me…my two cents worth (actually I’m being generous, I’m not sure my opinions are worth even a penny!)

I absolutely believe that racism and classicism still exist.

In some ways I believe that it is so deeply ingrained in the fabric of our country (how was the country built? On the backs of the indigenous, the poor and the minorities who in turn were relegated to second class citizens-and barely that- often not even given a footnote in many “traditional” history books and certainly not recipients of the advantages that becoming the power we are today has afforded the middle and upper classes) that we will never truly escape it’s poison. I think the damage that has been done (and continues to be done) will never be undone.

Having said that, I am also optimistic (or should that be naïve??) that we really can change the way people think and act. I think we can do certain things, small things, individually and collectively, that can influence the way the institutions of our society treat all people, regardless of how they may be “classified”.

I sincerely believe that the power and scope of racism, classicism, xenophobia, homophobia and all other –ism’s and phobias, will be severely minimized and marginalized if we just acknowledged what is wrong with the world and what is wrong with ourselves.

If we just admitted that we don’t have all the answers, that we are flawed and that we have prejudices and make mistakes and that we are SCARED, we would be able to begin repair work, little by little.

We could begin to make those changes through our art, our words, our actions, our respect, our activism.

If we understand ourselves we will understand others. As trite as it may seem, if you understand someone else, truly understand them, it makes it incredibly difficult to see them as anything less than an equal.

doghigh, truly insightful words, I hope that you belive in what you say!! I think change comes from the person in the mirror and then they spread that change and then it has a ripple effect. Thanks for the comment. Please continue.

Tony,
It was nice to hear from you and meet you. Yeah, Blazing Saddles is an all-time favorite. I read this post with interest. Yeah, I can understand that there are still some issues that need to be addressed in the debate about race. But not only in the African-American community, but in the Native American, and a number of other communities as well. I am considered as a member of the Hispanic community. 2nd generation to be born in this country. I guess for me as someone who grew up in a very mixed neighborhood, my take is a little different. I know that there are people who believe in cultural diversity and that's cool since that gives them a sense of identity & fufillment. Me, I subscribe to the 'what we have in common with each other' school. I use that as an ice breaker and then learn from others (regardless of race) to better express and improve myself. You left a note on my blog because you found we had something in common. We both have excellent taste in movies... To an untrained eye such as mine, that is (to me) the most profound improvement in race relations... our getting to know each other is based on something other than race. You couldn't say that 40 years ago... There's still work to be done, but I'm an optimist and believe our race, the HUMAN race, is a good people, the good outweighing the bad. My favorite saying is "It's not about seeing through each other, It's about seeing each other through..."

God Bless, Mik
